In this episode of My Cyber Coach

Host Jason Shockey simplifies the world of cybersecurity certifications, offering veterans a roadmap for starting their cyber careers.

Certifications are essential because they prove your expertise and help you stand out to employers in this competitive field.

Jason recommends starting with CompTIA Security+, a foundational certification that covers key topics like network security, cryptography, and risk management. It’s widely respected and often required for entry-level cybersecurity jobs.

Another excellent choice is CompTIA Network+, which is especially helpful for veterans with IT or communications experience. This certification focuses on understanding and protecting networks—an essential cybersecurity skill.

For a deeper dive into cybersecurity fundamentals, the GIAC Security Essentials certification is an ideal next step. It demonstrates your ability to perform security tasks and handle information security challenges.

As you progress, consider the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) certification, which teaches you to think like an attacker and defend against potential breaches.

Jason advises veterans to review job postings to see which certifications are most valued by employers. While certifications are crucial, hands-on experience and continuous learning are just as important. With the right certifications and skills, you can confidently start your cybersecurity journey.

About My Cyber Coach

Hi, I’m Jason Shockey, a retired U.S. Marine, CISO, and founder of MyCyberPath.com. I have 25+ years of experience in cybersecurity, 20 of which were in the U.S. Military and Intelligence Community leading cyberspace operations, cyber risk management, and cyber incident response. Three of my last 20 years were spent with the Cyber National Mission Force (CNMF) at the USCYBERCOM/NSA Campus at Ft. Meade leading national level operations.

I know firsthand how challenging it is to transition from military service into civilian life. Military veterans are uniquely qualified for careers in cyber security and I’m here to teach you why.
